When physics graduate student Jesse Silverberg took his girlfriend to a heavy metal concert, he didn’t dive into the mosh pit as usual. He hung back and observed that humans act like particles, dancing into “collective motion” — from which models could provide insight into panicked crowds.

Silverberg quantified the motions of moshers with fellow student and metal fan Matt Bierbaum for a project in the advanced statistical mechanics class of James Sethna, Cornell professor of physics. They discovered that the moshers’ behavior, like flocks of birds or gas particles, can be predicted with simplified theoretical models.

So while at Anime Expo ‘12, I saw a really cool and well done Pyramid Head cosplay from Silent Hill. I went over to take a photo and next thing I know, the person removes the helmet and it turns out she is a woman (not something I was expecting).

With her eyes, hair, makeup, giant sword, and cold stare, I was actually more scared of her without the giant Pyramid helmet on.

Seriously, an amazing cosplay job all around.

Jon Campbell, who briefly made Hartford a more interesting place with his presence and reporting for the Advocate, has entered the homebrew game with his signature Unemployed Reporter Porter (pictured).

“Porter style beers were first popularized in the nineteenth century by merchant sailors and manual dock laborers,” the label reads. “Unemployed Reporter is crafted in the same tradition, honoring a profession likewise doomed to decline and irrelevance.”

For this new class of “expendables,” the label goes on, “we’ve included chocolate and roasted barley malts that are as dark and bitter as the future of American journalism, and a high alcohol content designed to numb the pain of a slow, inexorable march toward obsolescence. Let’s be honest: Sometimes, the periodic table can seem a little daunting. There are so many elements – and more getting added all the time — and only a couple of letters to tell them apart, making it difficult to tell your Copernicium (Symbol: Cn) from your Cerium (Symbol: Ce). Thanks to a book by Japanese artist Benpei Yorifuji, there’s now a much easier way to identify the elements: Check out their hair and fashion sense.

In Wonderful Life With the Elements: The Periodic Table Personified, Yorifuji makes the many elements seem a little more individual by illustrating each one as as an anthropomorphic cartoon character, with distinctive hairstyles and clothes to help readers tell them apart. Nitrogens have mohawks because they “hate normal,” for example, while noble gases have afros because they are “too cool” to react to extreme heat or cold. Man-made elements are depicted in robot suits, while elements used in industrial application wear business attire.

“When we saw the book and his amazing artwork, we knew that we wanted to publish an English edition,” said Tyler Ortman, an editor at the book’s American publisher, No Starch Press. “We think that there’s an amazing opportunity to make science, technology, and math accessible to any reader, especially kids. Fun artwork and a little narrative go a long way towards engaging readers in topics that might be otherwise threatening or too abstract… We’ve tried to retain the playful spirit of the original.”

Just came back from their first show on their record release tour. Greg Gaffin even dropped some influenza science on us in between sets. Knowing that these artists are able to pursue a Ph.D, on top of playing and touring, really inspires me to keep working on my own. I have no excuse to quit if I can be as passionate as these guys.

This year has been off to a good start. Saw FIDLAR last Sunday, looking forward to OFF! and OM in February, and catching Allah-Las, King Tuff, and Nick Waterhouse at Burgerama this March.
